AGM vs EFB vs Flooded Car Batteries: Which Does Your Car Need?
Fit the same battery technology the car left the factory with, or better. A car built with an AGM battery must get an AGM. A car built with an EFB can take an EFB or an AGM. A car without start-stop is fine on a quality flooded battery. Downgrading saves money once and costs a battery within months.
All three are 12-volt lead-acid batteries, and all three will start an engine. The difference is how many times they can be discharged and recharged before they wear out — and a start-stop car asks for that many times more often than an older car does.
| Flooded (SLI) | EFB | AGM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | Starting, lighting, ignition | Enhanced flooded battery | Absorbent glass mat |
| Electrolyte | Free liquid | Free liquid, reinforced plates | Held in glass-fibre mats, sealed |
| Charge cycles | Baseline | About twice a flooded battery | Highest of the three |
| Start-stop | Not suitable | Entry-level start-stop | Start-stop with energy recovery |
| Typical cars | Older and basic models without start-stop | Small and mid-size start-stop cars | German, luxury and heavily equipped cars |
| Relative price | Lowest | Middle | Highest |
Flooded (SLI): the standard battery
A flooded battery is built for one job: a big burst of current to start the engine, then a steady top-up from the alternator. It does that reliably and cheaply, which is why it is still the right choice for cars without start-stop.
What it does not like is being run down. Each deep discharge takes a little capacity with it, so a flooded battery in a start-stop car — where the engine stops and restarts at every traffic light — wears out very quickly.
EFB: the start-stop step up
An enhanced flooded battery keeps the liquid electrolyte but strengthens the plates so it can survive roughly twice the charge cycles of a conventional battery. Car makers fit it to simpler start-stop systems, where the engine switches off at a standstill but little else is asked of the battery.
AGM: for heavy electrical demand
In an AGM battery the acid is soaked into glass-fibre mats pressed between the plates. Nothing sloshes, the battery is sealed, and it accepts charge quickly — which is what a car with brake-energy recovery needs, because it pushes charge into the battery in short, hard bursts.
AGM is also the usual fit where the battery lives in the boot or the cabin, as in many BMW and Mercedes models, because it is sealed.
How to tell what your car has
Read the label on the battery already in the car: it will say AGM, EFB or neither. If the engine switches itself off at traffic lights, it is one of the first two. If you cannot reach the battery or the label is gone, send us the make, model and year and we confirm it before a technician sets off.
Can you upgrade or downgrade?
Upgrading is allowed: EFB to AGM is a recognised step up. Downgrading is not. Varta's guidance is direct — where an AGM was fitted, only an AGM may be used as the replacement.
On many European cars the new battery also has to be registered with the car so the charging system knows what it is charging. That is a separate step from the fitting itself.
What changes in UAE heat
Heat ages every lead-acid battery, whatever the technology. Battery chemistry speeds up roughly twofold for every 10°C, and that applies to the reactions that wear a battery out as much as to the ones that start your car. A sealed AGM loses less water than a flooded battery, but it is not immune — it still needs testing before each summer.
Common questions
Can I put a normal battery in a start-stop car?
It will start the car, but it will not last. A flooded battery is not built for the constant stop-and-restart cycle, and the start-stop function often switches itself off once the car detects a weak battery.
Is AGM worth it if my car does not have start-stop?
Usually not. A quality flooded battery does the job for less. AGM makes sense if you run heavy accessories — a fridge, a winch, a large audio system — or the car spends long periods parked.
Does an AGM battery last longer in the UAE?
It handles deep discharges and vibration better and loses less water, but heat still shortens its life. Expect it to outlast a flooded battery in the same car, not to match the lifespan quoted for cooler countries.
