Auxiliary battery malfunction

Many Mercedes models carry a small auxiliary battery in addition to the main one. It backs up systems such as the gearbox park function and supports ECO start-stop. When it weakens, the dashboard shows the well-known auxiliary battery malfunction message, often while the main battery is perfectly healthy. The technician tests both and tells you which one has actually failed before replacing anything.

The battery is rarely where you expect

On a large number of Mercedes models, including many E-Class and S-Class generations, the main battery sits in the boot. Others hide it under the floor in the passenger footwell or beneath a cover in the engine bay. The engine bay usually has jump-start points either way. Tell us the model and year and we know where to look, which keeps the visit short.

EQ Boost and 48V models

Newer models such as the latest S-Class, E-Class and many GLE and GLS versions use a 48V integrated starter-generator, badged EQ Boost. The engine is started by that system, yet the car still has a 12V battery powering its control units, and when it is weak the car may not start at all. We replace the 12V battery; the 48V battery is dealer work.

Mercedes-Benz models: what to know

C-Class
About 70Ah on the C 200 and 80Ah on the C 300 and AMG versions, all AGM.
E-Class
About 80Ah on most versions, rising to 90 to 95Ah on the AMG E 43 and E 63.
S-Class
About 95Ah on the S 450 and 105Ah on the S 500 and S 580, often mounted in the boot.
GLE-Class
95Ah on the GLE 350 and 450, and 105Ah on the AMG GLE 53 and 63.
GLC-Class
Around 80Ah AGM across the common trims, including the AMG GLC 43.
G-Class
Heavy SUV often used off-road; match the original AGM battery and keep it firmly secured.

The small backup battery that supports systems like the gearbox park function and start-stop is weak. It is a separate part from the main battery, and it is often the only one that needs replacing.

Nearly all current models do. Fitting a conventional flooded battery leads to start-stop faults and a short life in UAE heat. Match the AGM type and capacity of the original.

On many E-Class generations it is in the boot under the floor, with jump points under the bonnet. The technician confirms the location from your model year.
