Low voltage looks like a dozen faults

A weak battery in a Range Rover or Discovery can throw up suspension, gearbox, parking brake or infotainment messages all at once. Owners sometimes book a workshop for an air suspension fault when the battery is simply tired. If several unrelated warnings appear together, especially after the car has stood for a few days in the heat, test the battery before anything else.

Many recent models have two batteries

Land Rovers with engine start-stop often carry a smaller auxiliary battery alongside the main AGM unit, supporting the electrics while the engine restarts. When the dashboard reports that start-stop is unavailable or names an auxiliary battery fault, it is often this second battery rather than the main one. The technician tests both and replaces whichever has actually failed.

AGM and registration

Current Land Rovers use large AGM batteries, around 95Ah on the Defender and Range Rover Sport and about 105Ah on the full-size Range Rover. The battery-monitoring system on many models expects a new battery to be registered so charging is adjusted to it. We fit the correct AGM battery; registration is done with dealer-level diagnostic tools, and it is worth arranging.

Land Rover models: what to know

Range Rover: Around 105Ah AGM on common trims, with heavy electrical demand even when parked.
Range Rover Sport: Around 95Ah AGM; start-stop versions may also carry an auxiliary battery.
Defender: Around 95Ah AGM on the 90, 110 and 130; desert use and accessories argue against downsizing.
Discovery 5: Seven-seat family SUV with lots of cabin electronics; weak batteries show as random warnings.
Range Rover Velar: Screen-heavy interior draws current at every start; match the original AGM size.
Range Rover Evoque: Smaller SUV but still AGM with start-stop; a flooded battery will not last here.
Discovery 4: Older air-suspension model where a tired battery often shows up as ride-height faults.

Yes, frequently. Low voltage can make the air suspension and other modules report faults. A battery test takes a few minutes and should come before booking a suspension repair.

Many start-stop Land Rovers have a second, smaller battery that supports the electrics during restarts. The message usually means that battery needs testing or replacing, not the main one.

The current Defender uses an AGM battery of around 95Ah. Send the year and engine and the technician brings the correct unit.
