In a hybrid or electric car the 12V battery powers the computers, locks and the relay that connects the main battery. It works lightly and is often ignored, then fails without warning: the car is dead even though the range display was full the day before. Heat still ages it. Knowing the 12V battery exists, and having it tested at service time, saves a surprise.
