Car Battery Size Codes Explained: DIN, JIS, Ah and CCA
A car battery label carries three things that have to match your car: the physical size and terminal layout (a JIS code such as 55D23L, or a DIN size), the capacity in amp-hours (Ah), and the cranking current (CCA). Japanese and Korean cars mostly use JIS sizes; European cars use DIN sizes.
Two batteries of the same brand can be completely different products. One will drop into your car's tray and bolt down; the other will be too tall for the bonnet to close, or will leave the cables a few centimetres short. The size code is what tells them apart.
JIS codes: most Japanese and Korean cars
JIS is the Japanese standard, and it is what you will find on most Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Lexus and Mitsubishi models sold in the UAE. A code such as 55D23L breaks down into four parts.
| Part | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Performance rank | 55 | A combined rating of starting power and capacity. Higher is stronger. |
| Case group | D | The width and height of the case. Letters run from A (smallest) upwards. |
| Length | 23 | Approximate case length in centimetres. |
| Terminal side | L | Which side the terminals sit on (L or R). The wrong one can leave the cables short. |
DIN sizes: European cars
European makes — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, and many Ford, Hyundai and Kia models — use DIN case sizes. They are lower and longer than JIS batteries, with the terminals recessed below the top of the case and a lip along the bottom edge that the hold-down clamp grips.
In the UAE these are usually sold by capacity: DIN55, DIN60, DIN66, DIN75 and so on. The number is close to the amp-hour rating.
Examples from cars we see every week
The sizes below are the fitments we have on file for popular models. Engine, trim and model year can change the answer, so the technician confirms against the car before fitting.
| Car | Battery size | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Camry, Corolla, RAV4 | 55D23L | JIS |
| Nissan Sunny, Honda Civic | 46B24L | JIS |
| Mitsubishi Pajero | 95D31L | JIS |
| Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, Lexus LX | 115D31L | JIS |
| Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage | DIN60 | DIN |
| Ford Explorer | DIN65 | DIN |
| BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class | AGM 70Ah | DIN (AGM) |
| BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE | AGM 80Ah | DIN (AGM) |
Ah, CCA and reserve capacity
Amp-hours (Ah) measure how much energy the battery stores. Cold cranking amps (CCA) measure how much current it can deliver in one burst to turn the engine over. Reserve capacity is the number of minutes it can run the car's essentials if the alternator stops charging.
Match or slightly exceed what the car maker specifies. A much bigger battery is not an upgrade if it does not fit the tray or the charging system was not designed for it.
Check the date code too
Batteries age on the shelf, and faster in a hot warehouse. Ask for the manufacturing date before a battery is fitted. Fresh stock is part of what you are paying for.
Common questions
Can I fit a bigger battery than the original?
Only if it physically fits the tray and hold-down and has the same terminal layout. A slightly higher capacity in the same case size is fine. A different case size usually is not.
What does the L or R at the end of a battery code mean?
It marks the terminal layout — which side the terminals sit on. Two batteries that differ only by L and R are mirror images, and the wrong one may not reach the car's cables.
Is CCA important in a hot country?
It still needs to meet the car maker's figure, but in the UAE heat resistance and build quality matter more than chasing the highest CCA number, which is a cold-weather measure.
