Chauffeured cars idle for hours
An LX or ES waiting outside a hotel or office with the engine running to keep the cabin cool is common here. Idling charges the battery only weakly while the air conditioning, lights and screens draw hard, and the heat around the engine bay is intense. Cars used this way often need a battery sooner than their mileage suggests, so a test at each service is sensible.
The h badge means a 12V auxiliary battery
ES 300h, RX 450h, NX and UX hybrids start their systems with a 12V auxiliary battery, frequently mounted in the boot or under a rear panel rather than beside the engine. It rarely needs to crank anything, so it can weaken quietly until the car refuses to enter Ready mode one morning. We replace this 12V battery; the high-voltage hybrid pack is not part of our work.
Don't downsize the LX
The LX 570 and LX 600 are large, heavy SUVs with serious electrical loads, often used for desert trips with extra lighting and fridges. They use a battery of around 100Ah. A smaller battery may start the car in a cool garage but struggle after a hot day in the sand. Keep to the full rating.

- About 100Ah on the LX 570 and LX 600; heavy loads and desert use make full capacity essential.
- GX
- Around 80Ah on the GX 460 and GX 550; body-on-frame SUV that is often taken off-road.
- RX
- Around 70Ah on petrol and hybrid versions; the RX 450h also depends on its 12V battery to power up.
- ES
- Around 60Ah; the ES 300h is among the most common hybrids we see and uses a 12V auxiliary battery.
- NX
- Compact SUV sold widely as a hybrid; check whether yours has the auxiliary battery in the boot.
- IS
- Rear-drive sports saloon; slow cranking in summer is the typical sign of a tired battery.

Very often, yes. The 12V auxiliary battery wakes the hybrid system. We test it on site and replace it if it has failed; the hybrid pack itself is not touched.
