ARO was a Romanian maker of rugged four-wheel-drive vehicles, based in Câmpulung, that closed in 2006. The larger ARO 24 series, with variants such as the 240, 243 and 244, served armies, farms and forestry services across Eastern Europe, while the smaller ARO 10 used Dacia mechanical parts and was sold in some export markets under other names. Any ARO in the UAE is almost certainly an enthusiast's vehicle, and the battery is often the first thing to check after it has been standing.

What a ARO typically takes

Electrics that are decades old
Most AROs still on the road were built in the 1980s and 1990s, with simple fuse boxes, basic alternators and wiring that has usually been patched by several owners. A new battery will not cure a charging fault, and on these vehicles that fault is often a loose earth strap between engine and chassis or a corroded connector behind the dashboard. We measure what the alternator delivers once the engine runs before calling the job done.
Engines vary from one ARO to the next
The ARO 24 series was built with a range of petrol and diesel engines over its long life, some developed in Romania and others bought in from foreign suppliers, and many vehicles have since had engine swaps. The right battery depends on what is actually installed, not the model plate. A diesel needs a strong cranking rating, while an old petrol unit is far less demanding.
Batteries that do not suit the tray
Previous owners sometimes fit whatever battery was to hand, held down with a strap or a block of wood. On a vehicle that bounces over sand and rock, that is how cases crack and terminals shear off. We fit a battery that suits the tray and clamp it properly, and if the original bracket is missing we say so before starting rather than improvising.
