BYD began as a battery maker in Shenzhen before it built cars, and today its range is almost entirely electric or plug-in hybrid: the Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal and Han run on battery power alone, while DM-i models such as the Song Plus, Qin Plus and Shark 6 pickup pair an engine with a large battery. What a BYD typically takes

We do not publish a specification range for BYD because we would be guessing. Send us the model and year on WhatsApp and we confirm the exact battery, the price and the arrival time in one message.

Why an electric BYD can refuse to start

The 12V battery powers the door locks, screens and control units, and it closes the contactors that connect the high-voltage pack. If it runs flat, the car may not unlock or switch on even with a full charge showing in the app. Parking for a long spell in summer heat, or leaving the car in accessory mode, are common triggers.

Lithium or lead-acid: check the label

Many recent BYD models use a lithium iron phosphate 12V battery rather than the traditional lead-acid type, while others and some earlier cars use conventional batteries. The two are not interchangeable without care, because charging behaviour differs. A photo of the 12V battery label tells us which chemistry your car uses, so we bring a matching unit or tell you honestly if it is a dealer part.

DM-i hybrids behave like petrol cars at times

Plug-in hybrids such as the Song Plus DM-i and Shark 6 start their engine only when needed, but their 12V battery still wakes the whole system. Short trips on battery power alone mean that battery is rarely stressed, yet heat ages it regardless. We test it on site and never touch the high-voltage traction battery.

BYD models: what to know

Atto 3
Compact electric SUV; if it will not unlock or power up, the 12V battery is the first thing we test.
Seal
Electric saloon; confirm the chemistry on the 12V battery label before booking a replacement.
Dolphin
Small electric hatchback often parked outside in the city; a weak 12V battery shows as a dark dashboard.
Han
Large electric or hybrid saloon with heavy standby electronics; test the 12V after long parking.
Song Plus
Family SUV, often the DM-i plug-in hybrid; its 12V battery is separate from the drive battery.
Shark 6
Plug-in hybrid pickup; accessory loads and outdoor parking are hard on the 12V battery.
Sealion 7
Electric SUV; send the year and a photo of the 12V label so we match its specification.
