The Datsun name belongs to Nissan and has lived two separate lives. In the 1970s it was the badge on the 240Z, 260Z and 280Z, sports cars now prized by collectors, including a small but keen following in the UAE. Between 2013 and the early 2020s Nissan revived it for low-cost cars such as the GO, GO+ and redi-GO, built for India, Indonesia and Russia. The two need completely different batteries and a different approach.

Classic Z cars: battery and charging

A 240Z or 280Z is now around fifty years old, and a flat battery on one is as often caused by a tired alternator, a corroded earth or an aftermarket accessory as by the battery itself. Many classics are driven rarely and stored in hot garages, which ruins batteries through slow discharge. The technician checks charging voltage after fitting, and a maintainer between drives is strongly advised.

Modern Datsuns: small and budget-built

The GO, GO+ and redi-GO were engineered to a tight budget with small engines and compact batteries. In the UAE they appear as private imports, and their documentation may not match local sources. The label on the fitted battery is the most reliable guide, and in summer heat these small batteries give little warning before failing.

Datsun models: what to know

240Z: Collectible 1970s sports car; test the charging system and wiring along with the battery.
280Z: Fuel-injected successor to the 240Z; long storage periods make a battery maintainer worthwhile.
280ZX: Later Z car with more electrical equipment; check for slow drains if the battery keeps going flat.
