Fisker owners are in an unusual position. Fisker Inc., maker of the Ocean electric SUV, filed for bankruptcy in 2024, and the earlier Karma plug-in hybrid came from a company that had already folded a decade before. Why an electric Ocean still needs a 12V battery
The Ocean drives on a large high-voltage pack, but its doors, screens, computers and the contactors that connect that pack all run from a conventional 12V battery. If the 12V side drops too low, the car cannot wake the high-voltage system at all. Replacing the 12V battery is a normal service task; the traction battery is a separate matter we do not touch.
The Karma: a plug-in hybrid from 2011
The Karma uses electric motors fed by a battery pack, with a petrol engine acting as a generator. Like the Ocean, it relies on a 12V battery to boot its systems. Many surviving Karmas are now collector cars that stand for long periods, and a 12V battery left flat in the heat is the most common reason they refuse to start.
Coachbuilt Fiskers follow their donor cars
Before the Karma, Fisker Coachbuild produced small runs of the Latigo CS, based on the BMW 6 Series, and the Tramonto, based on the Mercedes-Benz SL. Their electrical systems and battery layout follow the donor car, which on both places the battery in the boot. Tell us which one you have, and the technician will prepare accordingly.
