Diesel engines, heavy cranking

Many Fotons here run diesel engines, which need more cranking current than a petrol engine of similar size. A battery that has lost some capacity may still start a petrol car, but on a diesel minibus it shows up as a slow, labouring crank first thing in the morning. That is the time to test, before the vehicle fails with a full load of passengers waiting.

Idling with the air conditioning on

Minibuses and vans often idle for long periods so the cabin stays cool for drivers and passengers. At idle the alternator produces less current, while the blower and compressor clutch keep drawing power. Over a summer this steady deficit wears batteries out quickly. Fleet operators usually find it cheaper to test batteries at every service than to recover stranded vehicles.
