Hindustan Motors built the Ambassador near Kolkata from 1957 until 2014, a design taken from the British Morris Oxford that became the standard Indian taxi and government car for generations. Its stablemate, the Contessa, was based on the Vauxhall Victor and pitched as a more upmarket saloon. Check the polarity first
Many British-designed cars of the 1950s used a positive-earth system, the reverse of modern practice, and some classics have since been converted while others never were. Connecting a battery the wrong way round on an old car can damage the alternator, the radio or any added electronics. Before anything is connected, the technician confirms which terminal goes to the body instead of assuming it.
Taxi-duty engines and later updates
Over its life the Ambassador moved from its original petrol engine to later petrol and diesel units, including Isuzu-sourced engines in its final decades. A diesel Ambassador needs a battery with far more cranking power than an early petrol car. Because many of these cars have been modified along the way, we go by the engine that is fitted, and where the tray has been altered we measure it.
Storage in Gulf heat
A classic Ambassador or Contessa is usually a weekend car here, and weeks parked in heat are hard on a lead-acid battery. Old cars also tend to have small drains, from an aftermarket clock, radio or alarm that nobody remembers fitting. A simple cut-off switch on the negative lead, or a trickle maintainer if the car lives in a garage with power, keeps the battery ready for the next outing.

Yes, provided the size suits the tray and the polarity is right. Modern maintenance-free batteries cope with heat better than the old types, which is a real advantage in a UAE summer.
Drive it for at least half an hour every week or two, or fit a battery isolator. Short idles in the driveway do not put back what the starter motor took out.
