Maserati builds Italian luxury cars in Modena and Turin with a strong emphasis on engines and sound, but underneath the drama is a demanding electrical system. Current models use AGM batteries of roughly 70 to 100Ah, with a sensor that tracks the battery's condition. Owners here often split their driving between a Maserati and a second car, so the Maserati sits more than it drives, and that is when its battery gives trouble.

Look in the boot, not under the bonnet
On the Ghibli and the recent Quattroporte the battery lives in the boot, under the floor panel, to help weight distribution. The engine bay has jump points only. That matters when booking: the technician needs access to the boot, so clear the luggage area first, and do not let anyone jump-start the car by clamping onto the wrong terminals under the bonnet.
Parked Maseratis drain quietly
Keyless entry, alarm, telematics and several control modules draw a small current around the clock. After a week or two parked in summer, especially outdoors, a tired battery may not have enough left to start the engine. Each deep discharge takes away capacity for good. A maintainer, or a weekly drive of at least half an hour, keeps the battery in better health.
Mild hybrids and the Folgore EVs
Some newer Maseratis, including Grecale and Ghibli mild-hybrid versions, add a 48V system for the starter-generator, but they still rely on a 12V battery for the rest of the car. The electric Folgore versions also carry a 12V battery. We replace the 12V battery; the 48V and high-voltage parts are dealer work.
Maserati models: what to know
- Ghibli
- Battery in the boot under the floor; AGM with a monitoring sensor on the terminal.
- Quattroporte
- Large saloon with the battery in the boot and heavy electrical comfort features.
- Levante
- SUV with a high cabin cooling load; keep to the original AGM capacity or above.
- Grecale
- Mild-hybrid and electric versions still depend on a healthy 12V battery.
- GranTurismo
- Grand tourer often used at weekends; long gaps between drives drain the battery.
- MC20
- Mid-engined supercar that spends weeks parked; a maintainer is strongly advised.

Questions, answered.
In the boot, under the floor panel. The engine bay has jump-start points only. Clear the boot before the technician arrives.
Yes. Current Maseratis are built for AGM batteries and monitor their condition. A cheaper flooded battery will not suit the charging system or last in the heat.
Low battery voltage often triggers multiple unrelated warnings on modern Maseratis. Testing the battery is the first step before any other diagnosis.
