smart began as a Mercedes-Benz city-car project, and the Fortwo became famous for fitting nose-first into parking spaces. The petrol and electric Fortwo and Forfour are tiny cars with tiny batteries, often tucked away under the floor rather than under a bonnet. Since 2022, the brand has been a Mercedes-Benz and Geely joint venture building larger electric SUVs, the #1, #3 and #5, which carry a 12V auxiliary battery alongside their drive battery.

What a Smart typically takes

Where the Fortwo hides its battery
On many Fortwo and Forfour generations the 12V battery is not in the engine compartment at all; it sits beneath the floor on the passenger side, reached by lifting a carpet panel. Owners opening the rear engine lid often cannot find it. The technician knows where to look and refits the panel afterwards.
Small batteries and big city heat
A Fortwo is a short-trip car by design, and short trips rarely recharge a battery fully. Add a car parked on a hot street all day and the small battery has little margin left. If the car hesitates on the first start of the morning, or the central locking acts up, test the battery soon.
The new electric smarts
The #1, #3 and #5 are fully electric SUVs built with Geely. They use a 12V battery to boot their systems before the high-voltage pack connects, so a weak one can stop the car from powering up. We replace the 12V unit only; the drive battery stays with the brand's service network.
