TagAZ, the Taganrog Automobile Plant in southern Russia, assembled cars under licence from several foreign makers before production wound down in the early 2010s. Its own-brand Tager, sold from 2008, was a development of the second-generation SsangYong Korando, a short, boxy four-wheel drive with a separate chassis. A Tager in the UAE is a genuine rarity, most likely brought over by its owner, and parts knowledge is thin, so we work from what is actually under the bonnet.

What a TagAZ typically takes

Korando roots help with parts
Because the Tager's body and chassis came from the Korando, many owners find that Korando parts information is the best starting point, including for the battery tray and cable routing. That said, TagAZ made its own changes, and a car that has passed through several owners may carry a battery that is not the original size. We measure the tray and read the fitted label rather than relying on a parts list.
Petrol or diesel matters
The Tager was offered with both petrol and diesel engines, and the diesel asks noticeably more of the battery at start-up. A unit chosen for the petrol car will often work in a diesel Tager for a while, then fail on the first morning after a long stop. Tell us which engine you have; if you are unsure, a picture of the engine bay is enough for us to tell.
Old wiring on a rare car
The youngest Tagers are now well over a decade old. Corroded earth points, a worn alternator or an aftermarket alarm left by a previous owner can drain a good battery and make a healthy one look faulty. While fitting, the technician checks the charging voltage and looks for obvious drains, because a rare car is not one you want stranded far from help.
